BMW X3 E83 introduced BMW xDrive simultaneously with the updated E53 X5. Historical BMW documentation describes normal torque distribution as approximately 40:60 front/rear, continuously variable through the electronically controlled multi-plate clutch.

MY2009 naming structure
From autumn 2008 BMW changed X3 model names to explicitly include xDrive.
Petrol:
- X3 xDrive20i;
- X3 xDrive25i;
- X3 xDrive30i.
Diesel:
- X3 xDrive20d;
- X3 xDrive30d;
- X3 xDrive35d.
BMW stated the six-engine range ran from:
- 110 kW / 150 PS;
to
- 210 kW / 286 PS.
xDrive20d MY2009
- 130 kW / 177 PS;
- EfficientDynamics measures;
- EU5 in official 2009 material.
xDrive18d — 2009 addition
- 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel;
- 143 hp;
- 350 Nm;
- 0–100: 10.3 s;
- 195 km/h;
- 6MT only in cited market release;
- still xDrive despite the lower-output badge.
⚠️ Historical-document typo — 1980 km/h
BMW's 2014 15 years of BMW X models PDF lists the 2006 X3 2.0d top speed as 1980 km/h.
The contemporary 2006 factory technical data gives:
- 198 km/h.
Working canonical value = 198 km/h, while the 2014 typo is logged.
Production milestone
BMW historical sources:
- 500,000th E83 built in Graz in 2008;
- more than 600,000 sold before replacement in 2010;
- other official historical wording gives “almost 615,000”.
Production total remains expressed with source scope rather than inventing an exact integer.
