E90 launch — 5 March 2005

BMW launched the fifth-generation 3 Series with four principal European engines:

Technical themes:

• magnesium-alloy/lightweight six-cylinder architecture;
• Valvetronic on petrol sixes;
• second-generation Common Rail and VGT on 320d.

E91 Touring — 2005

Initial Touring range:

• 320i;
• 325i;
• 330i;
• 320d;
• 330d.

Later additions:

• 318i;
• 318d;
• 323i in non-European markets.

BMW also confirmed AWD availability for:

• 325i;
• 330i;
• 330d.

Representative early data:

• 330i Touring: 190 kW / 258 hp;
• 320i Touring: 110 kW / 150 hp;
• 330d Touring: 170 kW / 231 hp, 500 Nm.

E92 Coupé — 2006 boundary

E92 introduced major powertrain changes to the 3 Series:

• 335i with twin-turbo petrol six;
• High Precision Injection;
• 325i six-cylinder;
• later broad petrol/diesel expansion.

Initial headline:

• 335i: 306 hp class;
• 325i: 218 hp class.

The E92 is not a two-door E90 body row; body code, dimensions and market periods are separate.

E93 Cabriolet

E93 introduced the retractable hardtop Cabriolet body.

Confirmed model-family names in official market material include:

• 320i;
• 325i;
• 330i;
• 335i;
• 330d.

xDrive nomenclature
