BMW Group Classic states that Z3 M was planned in both Roadster and Coupé form. The M powertrain changed during the lifecycle, with market-specific North American engines.

Powertrain phases

Europe / principal non-NA — S50

• S50-generation 3.2-litre I6;
• 321 PS class;
• M Roadster and M Coupé;
• S50 production ended around 2000, with S54 successor sales from 2001.

North America — S52

BMW Archive confirms a special North American M solution:

• S52 engine family;
• separate output/specification from European S50;
• exact canonical PS/hp row remains н/д until the dedicated US factory technical sheet is attached.

S54

From 2001:

• S54;
• 3246 cm³ class;
• European M Roadster card: 325 PS / 239 kW from 06/2001;
• North America used an S54US market calibration.

Do not collapse European S54 and S54US.

M Roadster production conflict

• 15 322 Roadsters;
• says this represents >70% of all Z3 M production.

Dedicated M Roadster technical page

• says 4 819 vehicles manufactured over 1997–2002.

These cannot both be the same production scope.

Possible explanations include:

• one page counting a narrower powertrain/market subset;
• metadata/template error;
• a scope mismatch.

No figure is silently discarded.

M Coupé

Official facts:

• presented at IAA September 1997;
• Spartanburg production from April 1998;
• S50 and later S54;
• North American S52 and S54US solutions;
• body length about 4025 mm on Archive page.

Exact M Coupé body total is not inferred by subtracting conflicted M Roadster figures from 21,613.
