BMW M explicitly states that Group A regulations required at least 5 000 road-legal cars within 12 months for homologation. The E30 M3 was therefore engineered as a road car and race homologation platform together.

• weight: around 1 200 kg;
• top speed: 235 km/h in its heritage overview.

BMW Group Classic model-specific pages sometimes list 230 km/h for early/special configurations; source and model phase must therefore stay attached to the value.

BMW M current M3 E30 heritage overview: lists a 1987 BMW M3 with Evolution engine at 215 hp / 159 kW.

These may describe different homologated / production / update states, but they cannot be collapsed into a single 215-PS factory row without further documentation.

Motorsport derivative

BMW M gives for 1987 race version:

• about 300 hp @ 8200;
• later racing 2.5-litre configurations up to around 360 hp.
